In the world of vacuum tubes, certain models have achieved legendary status—think EL34, 300B, or EL84. Yet beyond these icons lies a wide range of underrated tubes that deserve recognition. One such example is the 6P1 (6П1 in Russian notation), a small power pentode that once found its way into countless vintage radios and amplifiers across the Soviet Union and China. Today, the 6P1 continues to attract DIY enthusiasts and collectors for its affordability, charm, and unmistakably vintage sound.

The story begins in the mid-1950s with the original 6P1, an audio output beam power tube manufactured in Great Britain by Ediswan (a company formed from the union of Edison and Swan). This tube featured an Octal base, a standard of its time, and was designed for use in consumer electronics. According to data from Radiomuseum.org, the Ediswan 6P1 typically operated with a 6.3V filament and could deliver around 4.2 watts of power. However, like many components from that era of rapid technological advancement, its time in the spotlight was brief. As noted by r-type.org, the tube was introduced in the mid-1950s and considered obsolete just a decade later, eventually being superseded by more advanced designs.

When you use your mobile phone or computer to listen to music, you will find that the sound is small, the details are small, and the dynamic is thin, their sound quality aren’t full and pleasant like as CD player, decoder. This is a mini class A single-ended tube amplifier, which use tube 6J1 as a preamplifier, and tube 6P1 as a power stage. Especially, it adopted switching power supply instead of power transformer to reduce the weight and volume of tube amplifier, also adopted boost circuitry to provide high voltage, its background noise is mostly between 0.5 mV to 1 mV, when volume potentiometer close to the minimum, and your ear touch to the speaker, and hum is not likely to be heard.




And, the preamplifier has tone control functions and adopts class A power, sound extremely delicate, slender high-frequency, low frequency plump and elastic, if use top op amp IC like as OPA2604 or LME49720, it will achieve perfect sound. It is a finished tube FM tuner, whose tubes have been located on the same board, so it looks compact and elegant.And, it used 6N3 as a high-level and mixing, 6C11 as the unit local oscillates, IF amplification as 6J4 together with 5pcs mid cycle inductance, and it has the advantages of high sensitivity, low noise. After stereo decoded by TA7343AP, then the signal will be amplified by tube 6N2 as a preamplifier. 


Its casing is made of whole aluminum metal chassis, gold with rushed oxidation treatment, and the front panel with 8mm thick aluminum plate, the others with 4mm aluminum one. On the front panel, there are dual level meters to display audio signal level, and the digital frequency meter display FM reception frequency. Electronic tube with a modern digital frequency meter that is complementing each other with nice, classical and elegant style, maybe the frequency display board of the wireless receiver is the designer's wisdom. The lower right corner of the unit has a knob to manually tune the radio. All tubes are exposed at the top plate for heat dissipation purpose, and equipped with cat eye indicator there. The whole structure of the tuner is compact, components layout had been optimized to be more reasonable.
