How to handle unbalance for left and right channel for your HIFI audio system

Someone had asked our technician what he could do when the audio system happened unbalance for left and right channel.We summarized it the tips as below and hope it help you to solve the problem.

Before checking and adjustment, Please make sure the tubes had been put right position and get well contact between pins of tube and tube bases all.

1. Firstly, please check if the left and right are unbalanced when volume potentiometer is rotated to any positions.
1). only if the time around the beginning of the volume potentiometer, imbalance problem should be caused by the volume potentiometer.
2). If at any position, it is imbalance, it should be other questions.

2. Sitting down / standing up in the middle position of your listening area, does not move (the previous position does not move), so let your families quickly replaced the left and right speaker cables from the outputs of the amplifier to change, the cable ends of speaker do not move temporarily
1). If the same thing happened still, it should be the speaker and cable led to the problem. Then, please exchange the speakers and don’t move cables, if there is an offset for volume, it should be caused by the speaker, and it is probably caused by tremble speaker. If there is no offset, please check the cables.
2). If you replace the speaker cables and it happened, it should be caused by audio amplifier or signal sourcing.

3. At this time, please exchange your RCA signal cable (up and down to exchange)
1). If there is a shift, then it should be the signal source. Please check your audio signal sourcing.
2). If not a shift, then it should be caused by amplifier or signal cable, then please check the amplifier. For tube amp, please exchange the tubes to find out the problem.


4. There is a possible problem is the speaker placement, please try it.

Audio amplifiers in mass production typically use an integrated circuit to amplify the audio signal. Even though modern audio amplifiers reproduce audio signals with less signal distortion than their predecessors, some audiophiles prefer the "warm" tone a tube amplifier produces when it reproduces an audio signal. Except integrated circuit to amplify, many audio and power amplifiers sold for personal and commercial use contain electronic devices called transistors. Transistors came about as an intended improvement upon an older technology—the vacuum tube, used as an amplifier component since the early 1900s.

One common type of vacuum tube - the triode - is commonly used to create tube amplifiers. A triode is so named because it has three electrical connections: the grid, the plate, and the cathode. A triode can receive an alternating current - or AC - signal through the triode grid connection, and can amplify the signal by application of direct current - or DC - electrical energy across the triode plate and cathode connections. A Class-A amplifier operates at an efficiency level between 25 and 50 percent. Therefore, a triode-based Class-A amplifier requires a high-voltage (100-volt or more) DC power source to provide power to the amplifier. Unlike transistor-based Class-A amplifiers, a triode-based amplifier also requires a separate direct-current (DC) power supply for a cathode heater. Without the cathode heater activated, a triode-based amplifier will not work.

While many transistor-based amplifiers are capable of reproducing and amplifying a signal without noticeable signal distortion, some audiophiles prefer the slightly distorted signal that a tube amplifier provides.

There are two types of tube amplifier output circuit: Push-pull output circuits that are wired so that the output current is split and runs in parallel, the other is single-ended output stages that are not split and run in a linear fashion. Single-ended tube amplifiers can generate more power from less current. Single-ended tube output circuits are used in both audio and instrument amplification. There is less distortion in a single-ended amplifier because the output currents do not cross over.

Before transistors were invented in 1947, all amplifiers ran off of vacuum tubes. The invention of the simple valve or tube is credited to John Ambrose Fleming, who created it while working for the Marconi Company in London, 1904. It was called the diode due to its dual electrode structure, which conducted electricity in one direction only. Lee De Forest then added a third electrode, creating the Triode, which he called the "Audion." It was the first electronic amplifying device. Its first audio application was boosting the signal of telephones. In the 1950s, valves began being used for music (and later TV) amplification.

In the early days of the electric guitar, general-purpose audio amplifiers were used. But as the instrument grew more popular, specialized tube guitar amplifiers were designed. In the 1960s, as rock and roll became the dominant popular music, manufacturers experiment with many different types of tube amplification, seeking variations in tone and greater flexibility of volume and gain (the signal drive which creates distortion). Many different types of tubes were used, with many different characteristics; some types included KT66, EL34, and KT88. EL34 and KT88 tubes are still in production today.

Tube amplified sound is generally considered to be superior and preferable to transistor amplified sound, especially for the electric guitar. The tube sound is generally much warmer and more organic sounding than solid-state. Tube amplifiers are also far more responsive to the dynamics of a guitarist's playing (how hard she hits the strings). Tube amplifiers, when played hard, produce some desirable grit that solid state amps do not. The tube amp is the easiest way to get a classic sound out of your guitar.

The main drawbacks of tube amplification are expense and durability. Tube amplifiers are much more expensive than solid state amplifiers, as solid state transistors are much cheaper to produce than tubes. Guitarists' demands for the more "authentic" sounding tube amps also drive up the price. Tube amps are also more fragile than solid state amps (the tubes can break) and are sensitive to heat and cold where solid state amps are not. Tube amps are also much heavier than their solid-state counterparts.But with process development of tube manufacturing, its durability has been improved significantly and working time is up to ten thousands hours or above.
